Welcome to MAMAMOOSIC, a blog project which focuses on the incredible music of MAMAMOO, a 4-member Korean girl group created in 2014 by Kim Do-Hoon of RBW (Rainbow Bridge World). The music of MAMAMOO employs elements of jazz, soul, funk, lounge, urban R&B, hip-hop, EDM and world music to produce a unique modern style which, although highly musical, ultimately still aims primarily for fun and excitement. Each post on this blog project will closely examine one of MAMAMOO's albums, and also include links to secondary non-album releases, exclusive online tracks, and live covers. Although MAMAMOO's accomplishments also extend into video production, dance, and fan engagement (of course), for now this blog will only concentrate on their musical achievements.

MIC ON

Mamamoo's 15th album (12th EP), MIC ON, was released on Oct. 11, 2022, and contained 3 uptempo songs, "1,2,3 Eoi!", "ILLELLA" (the title track), and "L.I.E.C". Following promotions for this release, Mamamoo embarked on a "world tour" titled "MY CON". Starting with 5 shows in Korea (Seoul and Chiba), the tour is currently scheduled into 2023 with dates in Japan, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Jakarta, Philippines and 9 dates in the United States.

WAW (& I SAY MAMAMOO: THE BEST)

Mamamoo's 11th EP, WAW, was released on June 2nd, 2021. A celebration of their 7th year as recording artists, this album was their first to consist entirely of ballads and slower tempo anthems. Promotions featured the title track "Where Are We Now" as well as "Destiny Part.2", a ballad version of the Reality in Black track which originally debuted as a single for the "Queendom" TV program. An episode of Moon Byul's "Studio Moon Night" served as a platform for a "Comeback show".

At the end of August the WAW Live Concert was held online. Originally slated for May, this concert would have debuted "Where Are We Now" before the release of WAW, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic the concert was repeatedly delayed and eventually ended up as a late summer online event (as opposed to their original plans for a late spring "offline" concert). Nonetheless, the WAW Concert did debut the songs "Happier Than Ever" and "Mumumumuch", both of which would appear on Mamamoo's following album, I SAY MAMAMOO: THE BEST.

Mamamoo’s 10th EP, Travel, was released on November 3rd, 2020. "Dingga" was released as a pre-release single on October 20, while the album release featured the title track "AYA". Although most promotional activities were muted (due to the Covid-19 pandemic), Mamamoo did air a television "Comeback Special" on MNET as promised to them by their win on Queendom in 2019. In February of 2021, the Japanese release of Travel featured a new song, "Just Believe in Love".

On April 13th, Whee In released her first solo album, Redd. Shortly after that, Mamamoo recorded a live concert for LiveNOW, an online streaming platform.

reality in BLACK

Mamamoo’s 2nd full-length album, reality in BLACK, was released on November 14th, 2019 (the word BLACK stands for "Bless Life And Carry Knowledge"). Hwasa contributed lyrics to the title song, "HIP", and Moonbyul contributed raps to six tracks. The concept design for this release included looks at the members of Mamamoo as if they lived in parallel universes living entirely different careers. This concept was also explored in the MV for "HIP". Additionally, the concept photos were released at 11:11 PM, indicating four parallel lines of existence creating a single "portal". However the use of "Destiny" as the title track proves that Mamamoo will eventually materialize as a unit in any world.
1st Universe: Mamamoo members of the universe we currently live in.
2nd Universe:
Solar is a princess.
Moonbyul is a music video director.
Wheein is an environmentalist.
Hwasa is a mother.
3rd Universe:
Solar is a boxer.
Moonbyul is a choreographer.
Wheein is a painter.
Hwasa is a musical actor.
4th Universe:
Solar is a rock star.
Moonbyul is an entertainment CEO.
Wheein is an indie artist.
Hwasa is the President.
Music from this album first appeared during Mamamoo's appearances on the girl group competition program Queendom, when Mamamoo debuted "Destiny" on October 25th, 2019. The title track for reality in BLACK was "HIP", although "Ten Nights" and "4x4ever" were also performed during a few comeback programs.

In the following months of 2020, most of the members released solo albums. On February 14th, 2020, Moon Byul released her second solo album, Dark Side of the Moon, led by the title track "ECLIPSE". On April 23rd, Solar released her debut album single "Spit It Out". Hwasa followed with her debut album Maria on June 29th.

reality in BLACK

1. "Destiny (We Were Meant To Meet Again Eventually)" (우린 결국 다시 만날 운명이었지)

This track originally appeared as part of the compilation Queendom FINAL and gave Mamamoo their win on the TV competition program. The song describes a breakup which will inevitably result in a reunion in the future. Featuring "country rap" breaks, strong melodies and driven by distinctive guitar lines, the song was later re-imagined as a ballad for the album WAW.

Arranged by 김도훈/Kim Do Hoon, 박우상/Park Woo Sang

Drum Programming: 박우상/Park Woo Sang
Chorus: 마마무/Mamamoo, 박우상/Park Woo Sang

English lyrics  /  Color-coded lyrics

2. "Universe"

This track has a synth element which translates to an element of "outer space". It also ties into the album theme of four parallel universes.

3. "Ten Nights" (열 밤)

This is a "post-break up" piano ballad which specifically highlights the vocal prowess of the members (Moonbyul has no rap and even sings the highest note in the song). It is also highlighted by some delicate guitar.

4. "Hip"
This song cleverly leverages guitar, brass and synth to create a dance powerhouse. The lyrics celebrate a person's individual sense of style without worrying about what other people think of them. It dismisses the need for acceptable fashion choices in order to satisfy traditional standards. In some ways, the lyrics address some of the media attention earlier aimed at Hwasa herself. The choreography for this song (created by Lia Kim) highlighted Mamamoo's most complex to date.

White Wind

On March 4th, 2019, promotion for Mamamoo's 9th EP, White Wind, began. Preceded by Yellow Flower, Red Moon, and BLUE;S, this was the last EP in a four-album series titled  "Four Seasons, Four Colors". In this year-long project, each album was designed to highlight one of the four group members, one of four colors, and one of four seasons. For this final installment, the album White Wind evokes the winter season, the color white, the nature force "wind", and highlights Wheein's role. On this particular album, each season is also represented by one of the tracks: "Bad Bye" - fall, "My Star - summer, "Waggy" - spring, and "25" - winter.

Mamamoo's creator/producer Kim Do-Hoon wrote and performed on half of the songs on the album, with the remaining tracks coming from other RBW artists (including the female duo Cosmic Sound/Cosmic Girl and frequent Mamamoo writer/producer Park Woo Sang). Lyrically, Moonbyul wrote raps to five of the six tracks on the album, while Solar helped write lyrics for the title track "Gogobebe" and Wheein co-wrote the lyrics to her solo track "25". The songs "Gogobebe" and "25" were each promoted through MVs (although Park Woo Sang also later released an MV for "4season (Outro)" on November 28).

The final phase of the Four Seasons project began on April 19th, when Mamamoo debuted a new stage production in Seoul titled "Four Seasons F/W" (with the "F/W" referencing the fall and winter installments). This production included new songs and arrangements different from the earlier "S/S" concerts. After additional dates in Singapore, Daegu and Taiwan, the final shows of the Four Seasons project took place in Japan on August 11th and 13th (although by this time they had already begun working with the "Queendom" TV program for broadcast in the fall).

White Wind

Like their previous albums during this period, White Wind continues to feature Mamamoo's modern approach to a wide spectrum of genres, including R&B soul, Bossa nova, reggaeton, "girl crush" anthems and house electronic music. What makes Mamamoo unique is their ability to meld these differing styles into an organic whole and still retain their own identity. At the same time, they also are confident enough to show their "goofier" side (in particular in songs like "Waggy", in which they dress in odd/hilarious costumes during some performances).

(In the notes below, the vocal line distributions are not exact, but meant more as a guide.)

1. "Where R U" (lyrics by Cosmic Sound/Cosmic Girl/Moonbyul, music/arrangement by Cosmic Sound/Cosmic Girl): This mid-tempo R&B song is driven by syncopated accents and some funky background guitar. Each chorus is preceded by a more "chill" pre-chorus section without downbeats. Lyrically, this is a love song in which the speaker pines for a soulmate, and speaks as if he/she is nearby listening.

English lyrics  /  Color-coded lyrics

Guitar: Park Ki Tae, Keyboard: Cosmic Sound
Background vocals: Cosmic Girl

0:00: Intro chorus (Solar, Hwasa) over pizzicato string accents and distant percussion.
0:20: 1st verse (Wheein, Solar) with syncopated beats and synth swirls.
0:40: 2nd verse (Hwasa) with added guitar ornaments.

2. "Gogobebe" (고고베베)
(title track) (lyrics by Kim Do-hoon/Solar/Moonbyul, music by Kim Gun-Mo/Kim Do-hoon, arrangement by Kim Do-Hoon): This is a reggaeton song spiced up with sharply-articulated Latin guitar riffing. It also has some very interesting accented syncopations, especially in the second half cadences of the chorus parts. Like many of Mamamoo's songs during this period, the song harmony essentially repeats, while the rhythm layers are varied from section to section to create dynamism. Older listeners may also notice that the song uses a hook from Kim Gun-Mo's song "Jjang Gah" ("Zzanga") as a melodic motif. Lyrically, the song urges listeners to let go of their inhibitions and just have fun (the rap section also celebrates Mamamoo's debut date, "6/19"). A rock version of this song was later premiered at the MGMA Genie Music Awards. From a performance perspective, this song also features a new evolution in their choreography (designed by Mina Myoung).

3. "Waggy" (쟤가 걔야) (lyrics by Kim Do-Hoon/Moonbyul, music/arrangement by Kim Do-Hoon): This is an infectious and bouncy Bossa nova tune with a catchy chorus and a unique bridge featuring Solar's "animal noises", topped with a melodic trumpet solo. Throughout, two acoustic guitars intertwine in bouncy rhythms over a popping bass line. The bridge also has a nice interlude where the song briefly becomes a soulful piano ballad. Lyrically, the song is about easy-going, sunny times, and implies the kind of innocent love associated with small animals. Finally, the first verse opens with the line "Je m’baladais sur l’avenue", which is a quote from "Les Champs-Élysées", a 1969 song by Joe Dassin.

4. "25" (lyrics by Park Woo-sang/Wheein, music/arrangement by Park Woo-sang): This is a "dreamy" R&B groove featuring Wheein as a soloist, backed by softly-echoed electric guitar chords over an electronic beat. Written by Wheein to celebrate her 25th year, she states that, "It's about longing for the past days that were naive and innocent, but also simultaneously showing that I love my current self." Producer Park Woo Sang would later work more extensively with Wheein on her 2021 solo album Redd.

Moonbyul has a more extended rap section in this song as well. Lyrically, this sad-but-resolute song describes circumstances leading to a "bad" break up, therefore "Good bye" is more accurately expressed as "Bad bye".

6. "My Star" (lyrics by Cosmic Sound, Cosmic Girl, Moonbyul, music/arrangement by Cosmic Sound, Cosmic Girl): This song has is a "fierce" groove with complex drum programming and heavy downbeats in the choruses. Brass accents add to the energetic choruses, hearkening back to aggressive earlier tracks like "Taller Than You" and "Sleep In the Car". However, the bridge appears in two sections, one featuring an acoustic guitar line and the other highlighting processed synth textures. The lyrics expresses the speaker's deep love for another, as if he/she were a "star" (the rap section also mentions December 22, which is Moonbyul's birthday).

The mood here recalls "vintage" Mamamoo (such as tracks "Just" and Memory"). The lyrics celebrate good memories and cite the "Four Seasons, Four Colors" themes star, wind, flower, and sun.
