Welcome to MAMAMOOSIC, a blog project which focuses on the incredible music of MAMAMOO, a 4-member Korean girl group created in 2014 by Kim Do-Hoon of RBW (Rainbow Bridge World). The music of MAMAMOO employs elements of jazz, soul, funk, lounge, urban R&B, hip-hop, EDM and world music to produce a unique modern style which, although highly musical, ultimately still aims primarily for fun and excitement. Each post on this blog project will closely examine one of MAMAMOO's albums, and also include links to secondary non-album releases, exclusive online tracks, and live covers. Although MAMAMOO's accomplishments also extend into video production, dance, and fan engagement (of course), for now this blog will only concentrate on their musical achievements.

Pink Funky

The release cycle for Mamamoo’s 3rd EP (Pink Funky) began when a single featuring RBW label mate eSNa on lead vocals (“AHH OOP!”) was released on April 1st, 2015. Although eSNa had not gotten a single with MAMAMOO until "AHH OOP!", she had actually played a major part in the band's early development. In fact, if Kim Do-Hoon is the "Father" of MAMAMOO, eSNa is the "Mother" (and even has been referred to as such by the band), since she contributed lyrics and music to most of their early albums and even helped oversee them during their trainee days.

In any case, MAMAMOO'S 3rd release, Pink Funky, was released on June 19 (a little over two months after "AHH OOP!"), featuring the title track "Um Oh Ah Yeh" (which reached number 3 on the Gaon Digital Chart). Pink Funky continued to develop the “retro” sound (based on soul and funk arrangements) established on the first two EPs Hello and Piano Man.

Aside from the usual promotional events (TV and radio appearances, live showcases), the band also returned twice more on Immortal Song 2 with the songs “The Way to Sampo” and “Delilah”. In August, Solar also appeared on the TV program King of Masked Singer. Mamamoo also produced a special concert for fans titled 1st MOO PARTY on August 23 in which almost the entirety of the new album was performed and exclusive "fan-oriented" videos were presented (including some videos from the band's "trainee" days). In a rare exception, no OST tracks were recorded during this period.

Pink Funky

If Hello and Piano Man explored Mamamoo's approach to 50s/60s R&B and "soul-jazz", their 3rd release, Pink Funky, moves forward into the 70s, incorporating funk and disco elements into the band's sound. One track also shows off the members' ability to explore "classic girl group" vocals in an acapella version of the title single. Aside from these "retro" elements, producers Kim Do-Hoon and Park Woo-sang also gives the album a modern sound by applying contemporary urban music techniques, such as the use of sampled sax breaks and vintage 808 drum machine beats. Moonbyul's contributions are also more developed here than ever before, essentially placing her in the top rank of South Korean rappers. One of main themes underlying this release is the blurring of male and female roles, as reflected in Pink Funky's promotional videos, in which the band members were made up as males and tried to experience a "man's life" as an undercover female.

1. "Freakin Shoes" (Lyrics by Hwasa, music and arrangement by Kim Do-Hoon/Seo Jae-woo/Hwasa): This verse sections of this trap hip hop song (using 808 sounds) employ two different looped sax breaks to establish a unique identity. Each verse is also preceded by a pitch shifted percussion break. The verse grooves and breaks develop throughout the song into different variations. Hwasa had contributed a strong "southern hip hop" tune to Hello ("I Do Me"), so this similarly "urban" track continues to show her growth. These lyrics were written during Hwasa's high school years, and describe her passionate fancy for a certain man as being similar to her interest in some highly desirable "freakin'" shoes.

Guitar: Jung Jae-Pil (정재필/영)
Background Vocals: Mamamoo
0:00: Filtered vocal intro ("I need a freakin' shoe, you know it!") into pedal bass vamp intercut with vocal breaks (Hwasa).

0:54: Pre-chorus (Wheein) with a more open groove.
1:19: Chorus (Hwasa, Wheein) based on verse groove.
1:40: Verse (Solar/Wheein) (guitars replace sax loops).
2:00: Verse (Hwasa) (sax loops return).
2:12: Pre-chorus (Solar).
2:38: Chorus (Hwasa/Moonbyul).

2. "Um Oh Ah Yeh" (음오아예) (title track, 1st top 3 single) (lyrics by Kim Do-hoon/Solar/Moonbyul/Hwasa, music and arrangement by Kim Do-hoon/Seo Jae-woo): This title track is a mid-tempo R&B song with verse sections highlighted by a synth counter-melody. The intro part is reintroduced in a variation during the bridge. The bridge also features a final vocal break which is frequently ad-libbed in live performances.

The title itself is made up of syllables which individually are used to express admiration for a "hottie", and the entire song is essentially a "come on". In the MV, each member of the band is in disguise, with Hwasa, Wheein and Moonbyul made up as male characters. In several vignettes, Solar tries to seduce Moonbyul, until Moonbyul is finally revealed to be a girl by her younger sister.

3:00: Chorus (Solar, Wheein, quartet adlibs) (extended to ending cadence).

3. "A Little Bit (Sting)" (따끔) (lyrics by Hwang Sung-Jin/Kim Chang-Rak/Lee Eun-ji, music and arrangement by Hwang Sung-Jin/Kim Chang-Rak/Lee Seung-Yeop): This is a soft rock ballad supported by strings. The end chorus has a nice key modulation. (Moonbyul does not appear on his track). The lyrics describe the painful "sting" left over from a broken relationship, although at the end, the speaker vows to push on.

3:30: Instrumental end coda.

4. "No No No" (갑과 을) (lyrics by Seo Yong-Bae/Park Woo-Sang/Moonbyul, music/arrangement by Seo Yong-bae/Park Woo-sang): This guitar-driven, 60s-style funk tune is something of an homage to the hard funk music of James Brown. It even includes vocal samples like "Hit it!". Co-written by Moonbyul, her rap over a solo drum break is a real highlight. The lyrics are an expression of revenge against a former lover after the speaker has improved her appearance and attitude (and has now taken the upper hand in their relationship).

Guitar: Jung Jae-Pil, Bass: Kim Sun-Il (김선일)
Background Vocals: Jung Geun-Young, eSNa, Park Woo-Sang

2:31: Rap (Moonbyul) with drum break and isolated guitar licks.
2:44: Chorus (Wheein/Hwasa/Solar), Chorus outro variation.

5. "Self Camera" (lyrics by Kim Seh-Moon, Park Woo-Sang, music/arrangement by Park Woo-Sang): This mid-tempo track is reminiscent of late 70s disco, although Moonbyul's rap again makes this tune very distinctive. The chorus near the ending is a nice variation of the previous ones. The lyrics describe the speaker's shyness towards her camera subject, whom she is falling in love with (the title implies that the speaker has become a "human camera"). Alternately, it describes "discovering a man you like, pretending to take a selfie, and putting that person on the screen." This track was used on an SBS drama soundtrack prior to Pink Funky's release.

Guitar: Jung Jae-Pil, El. Piano: Park Woo-Sang, String Arr.: Park Woo-Sang
Background Vocals: Mamamoo, Park Woo-Sang

0:00: Intro with synth, guitar, strings, disco groove.

2:21: Bridge (Solar (Wheein)).
2:34: Chorus variation (Hwasa) with lighter groove in the first half, cadence.
2:51: Final chorus variation with vocal adlibs.
6. "Ahh Oop! (아훕!) with eSNa" (single rel. 15.04.01 w Instr. Ver.) (music/lyrics by eSNa, arrangement by Choi Yong-chan, Rap by Moonbyul): A heavy guitar riff starts of this funk rock workout, which features plenty of "tough girl attitude" from the band members. The final chorus goes up one octave in order to raise the energy level. The lyrics demand respect from the speaker's admirers, and stresses the value of personality over material gifts/physical attributes. Unfortunately, due to disagreements over the promotion of "Ahh Oop!" (see eSNa's video for "Ahh Shit!"), eSNa soon parted ways with RBW, Mamamoo's label (although eSNa continued to make appearances with Mamamoo in live concerts). eSNa's solo version of the song can be heard here.

0:00: Intro with layered vocal accents.
0:16: Chorus (Solar, Wheein).
0:38: Verse (Solar, Wheein).
0:55: Rap (Moonbyul (Hwasa)) with added vocal accents from chorus.
1:13: Chorus (Hwasa), final adlibs.

8. "Um Oh Ah Yeh (Inst.)": This instrumental version highlights the variety of of the arrangement.

9. "A Little Bit (Sting) (Inst.)": This instrumental is probably unnecessary, but it does make it easier to hear the guitar solo.
