Welcome to MAMAMOOSIC, a blog project which focuses on the incredible music of MAMAMOO, a 4-member Korean girl group created in 2014 by Kim Do-Hoon of RBW (Rainbow Bridge World). The music of MAMAMOO employs elements of jazz, soul, funk, lounge, urban R&B, hip-hop, EDM and world music to produce a unique modern style which, although highly musical, ultimately still aims primarily for fun and excitement. Each post on this blog project will closely examine one of MAMAMOO's albums, and also include links to secondary non-album releases, exclusive online tracks, and live covers. Although MAMAMOO's accomplishments also extend into video production, dance, and fan engagement (of course), for now this blog will only concentrate on their musical achievements.

Yellow Flower

In 2018, Mamamoo began their ambitious "Four Seasons Four Colors" project, a series of four mini-album releases with each one highlighting a season, color, and group member. The first to be completed was Yellow Flower, which evoked the season spring, the color yellow and highlighted Mamamoo's youngest member Hwasa with a solo song ("Be Calm").

The first song to be released was "Paint Me", a single released on January 4th, 2018. This track essentially acts as a "teaser" for the entire project, as the lyrics evoke aspects of each of the four colors featured in the four album project. Moonbyul also contributes a more substantial singing part here (instead of just a rap interlude), signifying her increased role as a singing member on the album as a whole. On March 7th, Yellow Flower was released, with "Starry Night" as it's title song. Solar's song "Star Wind Flower Sun" was also promoted with an MV, as each word in the song title refers to one of the group members.

Yellow Flower moves further away from the retro-stylings of their earliest albums and fully embraces modern sounds such as "chill house" and Latin-tinged pop. At the same time, the songs continue to showcase "live" instruments such as piano and guitar, with two songs in particular based heavily on almost Hendrix-like guitar support. Several of the songs ("Starry Night", "Be Calm", "Rude Boy") use similar harmony progressions in both the verse and chorus parts, but the dynamic arrangements of each create drama as these parts interact.

In addition to Yellow Flower and its promotion, some of the other highlights in the first half of 2018 include Solar's first solo concerts ("Blossom"), Moonbyul's first solo album release Selfish (covered in Red Moon), and the group's participation in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics relay (and the release of the song "Taste the Feeling" as part of that event).

Yellow Flower

1. "From Winter to Spring (Intro)" (겨울에서 봄으로) (lyrics by Solar, music/arrangement by Solar). This is an acoustic version of the chorus to "Star Wind Flower Sun". The inclusion of this arrangement was inspired by Solar's rendition of the song on solo ukulele. The audio is taken from the MV for "Star Wind Flower Sun", which was filmed in New Zealand.

2. "Star Wind Flower Sun" (별 바람 꽃 태양) (lyrics by Solar, Moonbyul, music/arrangement by Solar/Lee Hyun-seung, TM). The lyrics and music for this song were primarily written by Solar as an appreciation of nature, as well as to express thanks to her family, friends, fans and fellow group members for their support during her journey. Additinally, each word in the song title represents a Mamamoo group member (Moonbyul = star, Wheein = wind, Hwasa = flower, Solar = sun). Driven by pensive piano chords, each verse has the group members' vocals weaving in and out of the melodic lines, as the song builds to an anthemic crescendo in the final chorus, ascending to a new key to heighten the dramatic effect. Solar also recorded a solo version (with piano) of this song for her mini-album Solar's Emotion Part 6.

3. "Starry Night" (별이 빛나는 밤) (title track, & MV) (lyrics by Kim Do-hoon, Park Woo-sang, Moonbyul, music/arrangement by Kim Do-hoon, Park Woo-sang). Solar characterizes the vibe of this song as Mamamoo's exploration of "chill-house" music. On the other hand, Wheein has described the song as a Latin-pop number (note the syncopated main guitar riff). Besides the great melody and chord progression, the arrangement of this track lends itself to many great dramatic arcs. Lyrically, the song describes fond memories of evenings with a lover from the past. The single also included an instrumental version.

4. "Be Calm" (덤덤해지네) (Hwa Sa solo) (lyrics by Hwasa, music/arrangement by Park Woo-sang, Hwasa). In this solo track, Hwasa tries to give comfort to those who feel down during the spring season. Each verse of this sensitive, longing song is dominated by soloistic Hendrix-like rhythm guitar (see Axis Bold As Love). Although beginning with a solo guitar, it soon builds into a full R&B groove.

5. "Rude Boy"  (lyrics by Cosmic Sound, Cosmic Girl, Moonbyul, music/arrangement by Cosmic Sound, Cosmic Girl). In this mid-tempo electro-funk song, a girl struggles with her suspicious feelings about a boy who is wooing her. The lyrics are structured as a dialogue between her and her friends, who try to warn her away from this "rude boy" with a bad reputation. The backing track is based on a repeating chord progression using cleverly-syncopated chord accents, but the verses and choruses are arranged in different ways to create a dramatic arc.

6. "Spring Fever" (봄타) (lyrics by Jowul, Moonbyul, music/arrangement by Command Freaks, Mayu). Like "Be Calm", this song is also driven by a chordal guitar approach. However, by employing only a single guitar track for the entire song, it highlights the group members' vocal abilities. The lyrics bemoan the fact that the speaker does not have a lover during such an enticing spring season.

7. "Paint Me" (칠해줘) (from single release) (lyrics by Jowul, music/arrangement by Mich Hansen, Peter Wallevik, Daniel Davidsen, Chelcee Grimes, Kara DioGuardi). Released earlier, this song was a "spoiler" for the Four Seasons Four Colors Project, and its lyrics hinted at the four colors soon to come when the full project launched with Yellow Flower. Musically, this is a bold choice for a single release, as it's not a dance tune, but rather an actual song composition arranged as a heartfelt ballad/anthem, with the final coda acting as a climactic vocal sequence. The lyrics characterize the stages of a love affair from white innocence to yellow infatuation to red passion, and finally to blue heartbreak. The speaker asks that her lover continue to "paint her" with these memories of their love affair. The single also includes an instrumental version.
