Welcome to MAMAMOOSIC, a blog project which focuses on the incredible music of MAMAMOO, a 4-member Korean girl group created in 2014 by Kim Do-Hoon of RBW (Rainbow Bridge World). The music of MAMAMOO employs elements of jazz, soul, funk, lounge, urban R&B, hip-hop, EDM and world music to produce a unique modern style which, although highly musical, ultimately still aims primarily for fun and excitement. Each post on this blog project will closely examine one of MAMAMOO's albums, and also include links to secondary non-album releases, exclusive online tracks, and live covers. Although MAMAMOO's accomplishments also extend into video production, dance, and fan engagement (of course), for now this blog will only concentrate on their musical achievements.

Purple

In 2017 Mamamoo released Purple, the group's 5th mini-album and 6th overall. The first Purple track to appear was "Da Ra Da", which dropped on June 4, 2017 - although technically the song "Love & Hate" had debuted even earlier when it was performed by Moonbyul in March for the MOOSICAL Curtain Call concert in Seoul. In any case, "Da Ra Da" was a new collaboration between Wheein and vocalists Jeff Bernat and B.O. (who also contributed lyrics and music, respectively). Purple came out only a few weeks later on June 22, 2017, with the title intended to reflect a merging of blue ("bluffing") and pink ("cute") moods. Note that the term "bluffing" here can be understood to mean "false airs", or "cockiness".

The title track for this album was "Yes I Am", another uptempo electro-pop "girl-power" anthem moving the group sound further away from the "retro-R&B" of the earlier period. The humorous track "Aze Gag" also gained popularity through a music video which poked fun at bad "Dad jokes". As noted above, Moonbyul got a solo track titled "Love & Hate", which was written by Moonbyul and Park Woo Sang. As with Mamamoo's previous albums, RBW CEO Kim Do Hoon handled most of the producing duties, with additional arrangements by Park Woo Sang and Cosmic Sound/Cosmic Girl. Purple eventually maintained the No. 1 spot on the Mnet M Countdown program for 3 straight weeks, earning it a "Triple Crown". In 2018, "Yes I Am" was one of 20 songs chosen by activist Malala Yousafzai for a World Women's Day 2018 song playlist. Mamamoo finished up 2017 with a Coca-Cola/Olympics promotional song in November titled "Taste The Feeling".

Purple

1. "Yes I Am" ("If You Think I’ll Tell You"/나로 말할 것 같으면) (lyrics by Kim Do-hoon/Solar/Moonbyul/Hwasa, music/arrangement by Kim Do-hoon): This title track is a catchy dance-floor anthem with an energetic uptempo beat. In contrast to some of Mamamoo's earlier synth-pop offerings, "Yes I Am" doesn't employ any kind of synth counter-melody since the vocal top-line is already very catchy. At the same time, the arrangement also features many interesting "special effects" in the way of sampled "stings" and a cleverly-textured background vocal track. The lyrics celebrate the confidence and un-self-conscious tastes of the speaker, who holds pride in her natural-appearance despite social trends. The MV for this song features neon/day-glo colors arranged as a fashion pictorial, a concept which would soon blossom into the "4colors" project. The video also sometimes pokes fun at the group: although they are seemingly portrayed as "high-fashion" icons at first, they are later shown to be in more "cute" circumstances. For example, Moonbyul is first shown in a sports car, but this is then revealed to be a "mini-car". In another example, Wheein is paired with a bulldog as opposed to a chihuahua or poodle (a more "girlish" dog). English lyrics. MV. MV Commenary

2. "Finally" (lyrics by Cosmic Sound/Cosmic Girl/Moonbyul, music/arrangement by Cosmic Sound/Cosmic Girl): Like the title track, "Finally" is a synth-driven pop song but has a uniquely sunny "tropical" element. The syncopated verse and chorus parts are contrasted by pre-chorus sections featuring Moonbyul's rap over evenly-articulated rhythms. Additionally, the bridge employs "backwards" synth textures to create a floating feeling. The lyric describes the speaker's joy at finally finding her perfect romantic partner as she invites him into her heart. English lyrics.

3. "Love & Hate"  ("Beg"/구차해) (Moonbyul solo) (lyrics by Moonbyul/Park Woo-sang, music/arrangement by Park Woo-sang): This casual R&B hip-hop groove features Moonbyul as a solo vocalist (with Wheein adding some background vocals). It was first revealed to the public in Moonbyul's solo section of the MOOSICAL Curtain Call concert from March 2017. Besides a piano-synth driven trip-hop rhythm, it also features some fine guitar leads in the latter half of the song, as well as several interesting moments where the vocals are filtered with various effects. The lyrics describe the speaker's frustration from being in love with an unresponsive romantic partner, as she berates herself for being "pathetic". English lyrics.  MV

Background vocals: Wheein, Park Woo-sang

1:16: Verse with reduced rhythm track in first part
1:37: Chorus
1:58: Bridge (thinned texture but based on chorus), rap
2:20: Chorus with extended refrain and guitar solo

4. "Aze Gag" (아재개그) (Narr. Kim Dae Hee & Kim Jun Ho) (lyrics by Solar/Hwasa/Moonbyul/Kim Do-hoon, music by Solar/Hwasa/Kim Do-hoon, arrangement by Kim Do-hoon): This "retro-funk" song with "hyphy" style rap elements features the group members trading corny "Dad jokes", with some of the puns actually coming from MooMoos (fans). Starting out with vocal samples and tasty accented bass, the rhythm track is soon joined by slashing funk guitar. In short order, sliced up brass parts and vinyl scratch textures join in the playful fray. The bridges feature a "jumping bean" synth part, followed by a "dialogue break section" which is featured in the MV (with comedians Kim Dae-hee and Kim Joon-ho) but muted on the CD release. English lyrics. MV with subs.

Guitar: Kim Do-hoon

0:00: Intro with vocal samples over bass

1:19: Verse with opening vocal break (Hwasa)
1:48: Chorus
2:17: "Bouncing" synth break
2:32: Intro reprise
2:45: Chorus, synth break variation (coda)

5. "Da Ra Da” (다라다) (Whee In, Jeff Bernat, B.O.) (lyrics by B.O., music/arrangement by FireBat/B.O.): This is a piano-driven R&B tune featuring vocals by Wheein, Jeff Bernat and B.O. The mood here is soft and syrupy in contrast to the remainder of the album. Key changes occur twice in this song, which eventually finishes off with some nice harmony vocals in the coda. Essentially a love song, the speaker's strong feelings inspire him/her to playfully chant "da ra da" as a celebration of his/her joy. English lyrics. Making of MV

Also, the version of “Aze Gag” in this edition uses the extended dialogue version from the MV.).
